Postcards Design a quilt postcard that is 4" x 6". It can be any style, but it must be only 4" by 6" in size. The card can be oriented horizontally or vertically. A fabric postcard can actually be sent through the mail if it is stiffened enough to feed through the postage machines. It would be great to make several to keep on hand for special occasions! |

submitted by Pat -- Eight is Golden! Olympics (Chinese) 2008 I traced the Chinese from a scan of image in our newspaper. This is my tribute to a superb athlete (and human being) Michael Phelps who won 8 gold medals! He surpassed a record of 7 gold medals won in the 1972 Olympics (Munich, Germany) held by Mark Spitz. I watched those events on TV, too! Thank you, Angie Padilla for your book "Applique Drawing EQ6". I am working my way through and am on page 97 and have improved my drawing & tracing skills tremendously, thanks to you! I recommend this book if you want some really good tips on drawing. Well written and easy to follow. The background represents the Bird's Nest stadium. Although swimming took place in "The Cube", I like the Bird's Nest as a background. I got the swimming logo off of the WWW and then traced it. That's where what I learned in Angie's book was put to use.

BarbV's challenge -- Whole
Cloth Quilts Design a quilt with just quilting patterns. This is traditionally called a "whole cloth quilt." Only quilting should be shown, for the quilting will create the design for the entire quilt. Color the quilting lines with thread that has a good contrast with the background so they can be seen on the web site display. You may use different colored threads, but don't use colored patchwork or appliqué this time. You _may_ use embroidery patterns, but they must be quilting designs. |

submitted by Pat -- Webbed Pumpkin After working with the Stencils and being able to use any color of thread for Quilting Stitches, I think that this center motif can also be done as Redwork. Can do Redwork by hand or by machine. See my article on redwork by machine - bluework.html Can use embroidery stitches or use a "Big Stitch". The border can utilize any Halloween themed fabric and the size of border would be determined by the motifs in the fabric. This would make a nice pillow or wallhanging.

BarbV's challenge -- "Design a quilt with a pieced background and a silhouette motif overlay. You may use any theme and can incorporate borders." -Barb Vlack |
|
![]() |
submitted by Pat -- The background blocks are fashioned after the "stack & slash" blocks. My daughter on the left, her daughter on the right. When my daughter was a young girl, an artist did a silhouette cut-out of her profile. It is framed and hanging in our home. The artwork is not dated. I took a digital picture of the artwork and converted it to a BMP so that I could trace my daughter's silhouette in EQ5. I took a digital photo of my granddaughter's profile, converted it to a BMP and traced it in EQ. I thought that my daughter's silhouette might have been done at about the same age that my granddaughter is now. From the traced drawing, it looks as if my daughter was a little older than her daughter at the time that my daughter's silhouette was done. I like this quilt ... I just might make it in real fabric. Or, maybe just include a graphic of this quilt in a Slideshow that I will make!

BarbV's challenge -- "Explore the EQ Block Library and
find two blocks that can be superimposed to create an entirely new block.
This can be a really fun thing to do and something you might not think to
do without the computer to help you! Start by looking at blocks with similar
grids. You can explore further by getting bold about what you combine.
The superimposing or overlaying of one block design over another can be done in the Edit mode from the Sketchbook. Save two blocks into the project Sketchbook. Edit one and select all the lines. Copy. Then Paste those lines over another block drawing that you have selected to Edit from the Sketchbook. Carefully center one over the other and look for design elements to highlight with color." -Barb Vlack |
|
![]() |
submitted by Pat -- Used "Crosses & Stars" and "Vines at the Window" from the EQ block libraries. Had to eliminate some lines when I superimposed the blocks. Every other block is rotated ¼ turn. Added some sashing that was designed exclusively for the quilt. The new block and sashing make for a very nice looking quilt.

BarbV's challenge -- Create a Medallion Quilt! "In EQ5 there are some layouts in the Layout Library to make your designing challenge a lot easier. submitted by Pat -- Tryin' to Keep Cool Ah, the summer heat must be getting to me! When I first saw all the fish in the Appliqué library in EQ5, I knew I had to find an excuse to use one in a design. I even managed to use the Water Lilies and Reeds. I used one of the On-Point Medallions from the EQ5 Layout Library. I don't know why, but looking at the quilt makes me smile...I like all the bright colors and that friendly Angel Fish face.

BarbV's challenge -- Red, White and Blue "July is the month of patriotism for America, but the red, white, and blue color scheme can be used by anyone, anywhere. Design a quilt with these three focus colors. Use tints or shades or various fabrics if you desire. You may even challenge yourself to use these colors in a way that does _not_ say 'American flag'." |

submitted by Pat -- Picnic Quilt I drew a star that could be rotated and flipped so that it would like like a different star from block to block and give movement to the quilt. BarbV's challenge -- A Basket Full of Goodies! "Go to the EQ Block Library and search in the Paper Piecing section. Look in Baskets and find the Curved-Handle Basket block. If you display 16 blocks, it's in the third horizontal row, on the right. Decorate that basket! (I got this idea from Pat Tribbey, who hosted an EQ basket block exchange in 1998!) This is a great time to learn to design an Overlaid block." |
|
|
submitted by Pat -- Basket Full of Posies I modified the Curved Handle Basket block with a "weave". For the flower, drew a petal & wreathed it in WreathMaker. Pasted basket into Overlaid block and then pasted flowers, here & there, in appliqué tab. Drew a leaf and cloned it to get several in the basket. Also designed the border blocks and the border vines in layer 2.

BarbV's challenge -- "In the 5-Patch category of Classic Pieced blocks in the EQ Library, there is an interesting block called Sister's Choice (near the end of the block display), which is also known as Four X Star (at the beginning of the block display). Color this block with many colors and be creative with your quilt settings. Here is a wonderful opportunity to experiment with different color schemes using three or more colors. There are enough patches in this block to accommodate some challenging arrangements of colors. It's okay to combine this block with others for your quilt designs. " |
|
|
submitted by Pat -- I used the Four X Star block which is almost identical to the Sister's Choice block. The block looked very different when using different values of colors in various positions on the block. I converted the Four X Star block to "guides" and and drew lines to get the block with square and diamonds for the alternate block.

BarbV's challenge -- "Design a quilt with appliqué motifs or blocks. ("Motifs" in EQ 4.1 have no block outline and are intended for laying over a background.) Use your appliqué however you like. You may include appliqué blocks or motifs from the EQ Library or design your own! Please, no copyrighted material is allowed here (that is not your own original copyright)." |
|
|
submitted by Pat -- But, oh, those bugs! How wonderful it is that our computers connect us (and our sewing machines) to the Internet...but, oh, those bugs! The turquoise background with the "wire" is an original block design done in Layer 1. The rest of the appliqués are in Layer 2 and are from the EQ block library.

| BarbV's challenge -- "This challenge was suggested by Peggy Raley, who wanted to see what we could do with the Triangle In and Triangle Out border options. The challenge is to design a quilt with at least one of the borders being Triangle In or Out. " -Barb Vlack |
||
| 2001 December |
|
submitted by Pat -- Looks like a Rubber Stamp! Used Triangle In border with the Picket Border 1 from Classic Pieced, Checked borders. What's cool is that this quilt can actually be made! In Quilt view, click on the block in border and File, print, templates and then click "size from quilt" and you will get a printout of the templates. The second quilt is four of the motifs, with border 1 as Triangle Out and border 2 as Triangle In.

BarbV's challenge -- The guest hostess for September's clubEQ challenge is Peggy Raley from Boerne, TX. Here is Peggy's challenge: "Use the Snail's Trail block in any quilt setting with any variety of colors to come up with new ideas! 'Snail's Trail' is also known as 'Monkey Wrench' or 'Virginia Reel'. You'll find it in the EQ Library under Classic Pieced, Classics or Classic Pieced, Diamond in a Square. You're welcome to manipulate it in any quilt setting, with or without borders, as you please or combine it with other blocks for secondary designs. " -Barb Vlack |

BarbV's challenge -- "The challenge for this month is TABLERUNNERS! Design a long narrow quilt that would look good on a table. It could be seasonal or otherwise. You get to pick the size. If you would like to put an irregular edge on your tablerunner, color the setting spaces black, so the straight edge of your quilt will blend into the black background in EQ Show. " |

BarbV's challenge -- "So many of us have exchanged blocks among our quilter friends and then are faced with the dilemma of how to set them attractively and what we might do if they are not all exactly the right size. Design a quilt layout or two that you might use for one of your quilt block exchanges." |
|
|
submitted by Pat -- "Swap Chain" - Quilt 1 11 swap blocks from friends The frames that surround the swap blocks can be adjusted for each swap block, so that the block's size will remain the same, from block to block. This is a horizontal setting, although the chain makes it look like a diagonal setting.

| 2001 April Colors |
BarbV's challenge -- "Expand your color palette to get Shades and Tints, Tones, or Grades and color away! Show in your quilt example (your choice of blocks and layout) ways to achieve a look of transparency or to grade values of a single color. You can expand your color palette in EQ4.1 by clicking on a solid color on the Color palette, then right-clicking to get the pop-up menu. Make a choice and work from there. See the Help file Index for "Adding colors," etc. " CAUTION: There is a 256 limit to adding colors to the palette, so don't go too crazy. Once you add the colors, you cannot delete them from that one project. You can reduce the number of colors in your color palette only by starting a new project file. |

submitted by Pat -- I have re-created a quilt that I originally designed in EQ3. The story of this quilt appeared in the February 1997 edition of "The Floppy Gazette". | 2001 February Symmetries |
BarbV's challenge -- Take a block that is asymmetrical or color one in an asymmetrical way. Set blocks to show effects of rotation to change the symmetry of the block presentation and create secondary designs. There are a lot of ways to play with this. Rotate as much as you like. Look at the blocks in the EQ library, Paper Piecing, Crazy Foundations for lots of examples that will work well here. See the chapter on Doodle Quilts in EQ4 Magic for more ideas. |

| 2000 September NinePatch |
BarbV's challenge -- The good old 9-Patch. Use a 9-Patch or two or several in your quilt design. Somehow, somewhere. It can be incorporated as a part of other blocks, stand beside setting blocks or sashings, or hide in a corner of an appliqué layout. It does not have to be the dominant block in the quilt. Just use it somewhere, even if we have to play "I Spy" to find it. |
|
|
submitted by Pat -- Each block's corner makes up part of NinePatch which is also part of sashing. I designed the border's corners especially for this quilt.

BarbV's challenge -- Use the Bear's Paw block from the EQ Block Library to make a different kind of a quilt. Find new and fancy ways to set this wonderful block. See what you can do with one block... |
|
|
submitted by Pat -- Bears are in the woods. Log cabins are in the woods. So, I made a center Bear's Paw of Log Cabin blocks and surrounded it with a border of Bear's Paw blocks. Where's the woods? On the back of the quilt, of course! LOL

2000 Multiple Borders |
BarbV's challenge -- Your Own Personal Round Robin! Design a quilt with multiple borders (that means more than one, but preferably 3 or more). Spacer strips and binding don't count as borders. You may use pieced, appliquéd, or a combination of the two. Here is an exercise to develop a theme quilt, use new techniques, design a quilt around one complex block, or stretch to try some different color combinations than those you're used to using. You're doing this "Round Robin" solo. |
|
|
submitted by Pat -- I used BarbV's formula for multiple borders:
It worked! Fabrics from EQ designer fabrics - Benartex Benarbasics. Most blocks from EQ libraries. Some angular & swag blocks were drawn.

submitted by Pat -- I "cheated" a little bit here...this is a card that I made for some online friends in 1999, but I have changed some of the fabrics. To get the graphic and make a "card" like I made, export the BMP of your quilt into Adobe PhotoDeluxe or PaintShopPro (or a similar graphic program) and put "Hoppy Easter" text on it. Convert it to a JPG file in SmartSaverPro (or use Iranview) and attached it to email. I use SmartSaverPro to make a JPG file, cuz Adobe PhotoDeluxe and PaintShopPro makes too "weighty" of a file.

| 2000 February Country Set |
BarbV's challenge -- Let's Use Country Set! We all have collections of odd-sized blocks. Find a way to set them into an attractive quilt. Country Set is the layout of choice for combining blocks of various sizes. TIP: You may want to take a look at the section in EQ4 Magic, "Using a Block as a Quilt Layout Template", page 118. You will find blocks in the EQ Library made up of squares and rectangles and squares on point that could be a guide for setting blocks in Country Set. Please note: This month's challenge is not intended to include razzle dazzle layouts with skewed diamonds or irregular grid optical illusions. We'll save that for another time. ;-) |

submitted by Pat -- I had a dream that everyone in the "From our Friends" library in Sew Precise 1-2 sent me a block. Some were kind enough to send more! It must have been the pickles that I ate before retiring, cuz they sure used some wild colors! Fran, Diane, BarbV, Lynne and Linda, I hope you all enjoy what I did here in Country Set with your blocks...I also included "Pat's Palm" which is my block in the library. No, the quilt is not "tipsy"...It is the skewing of BarbV's "Undulating Geese" in the sashing. The "Undulating Geese" block is in the Sew Precise! 1-2 collection.

| 2000 January Quilting Stencils |
BarbV's challenge -- Get acquainted with using quilting stencils when designing quilts in EQ4.1 (download the free upgrade from the EQ website). Use a stencil you draw or one from the EQ4 Library to enhance a quilt that you design. The examples use the very simple 9-patch blocks set with Snowball blocks. The Snowballs offer an open space for a quilting stencil design. Don't forget border possibilities! Submit designs for quilting in blocks, in corners, sashes, and/or borders. Your choice. |

| 1999 October MapleLeaf |
BarbV's challenge -- Maple Leaf. With all the changes in the fall colors going on right now in the United States, how about using the Maple Leaf block from EQ Libraries, 1 Classic Pieced, Nine Patch, Maple Leaf (if you have 16 blocks showing in the display, it's the third down on the far right column)? Use the block as is or lose it within another block. Do anything you like, but you must have at least one Maple Leaf block in your layout design. Color it autumnally or otherwise... |

submitted by Pat -- "Halloween Hold-out" The last leaf on the tree, will it give up it's fight? This quilt was influenced by Simply Quilt's program (HGTV) of October 1, with Faye Labarnaris who did the "Quilt with a View". The Halloween appliques in center are from the EQ Library, 5 Contemporary Applique, Rita Denenberg Easter & Halloween. I modified the tree from 5 Contemporary, Garden Blocks. I designed the Maple Leaves (that are in the center) as an applique by exporting an EasyDraw Maple Leaf as a bmp and then importing the bmp as a bitmap in PatchDraw and tracing it.

| 1999 September Storm at Sea |
BarbV's challenge -- Let's take one block and see what we can do with it. The Storm at Sea block is the first block in the EQ Libraries under 1 Classic Pieced, Old Favorites. Take the block, color it, skew it, distort it, redraw it, use it in creative ways. The rule is that somehow we must be able to see at least something vaguely resembling the original block when you're finished... |

submitted by Pat -- "Which Way Away from the Storm?" When the Storm at Sea blocks were placed in a Diamond Blocks border, they looked like arrows pointing away from the center, which is the storm. The Storm at Sea blocks in the corners of the border look like airplanes, flying away from the storm. And there is a star in the center of the storm, promising that all will clear.

| 1999 July Christmas in July |
BarbV's challenge -- Here's another theme quilt idea. You can search through the EQ4 Libraries or draw your own blocks to come up with a quilt design. Although I'm calling it "Christmas", if Christmas is not one of your celebrated holidays, you're welcome to substitute your favorite holiday or a winter quilt design. |

submitted by Pat -- Thought this "Christmas Trio" would make a nice grouping. I saw the Ohio Star coloration in an ad and thought it would make a nice single flower. Used 2 flowers and the heart in the middle.

This is a real quilt, also! |

| 1999 June Patched Sashing |
BarbV's challenge -- In EQ4, with just a click of Ctrl+click on sashings in our quilts, we can set blocks to create pieced sashings. We can do the same to set blocks into the cornerstones of the sashings, too. The challenge this month is to find some innovative ways to use sashing blocks in your quilt layouts. It will be interesting to see what effects you get when you take a square block and skew it into a sashing rectangle. |

submitted by Pat -- I had "too much fun" with this and it was a tough decision to choose which quilts I wanted to "show & tell"...I made so many. The quilts were colored in the Quilt workspace. I ended up doing what I did in theJanuary '99 clubEQ Challenge -- got a new design from the blocks and the sashing when coloring directly on the quilt. Project file not available. |

| 1999 May Wedding Quilts |
BarbV's challenge -- Some of us have weddings in our families or among our friends this summer. Now is a good time to consider special designs for wedding gift quilts. You may design a large bedsize quilt or a wallhanging. In fact, the wallhanging might be a very practical gift item that wouldn't have to take as long to make as a bed quilt. Follow the theme and design a pieced or appliqued or combination quilt. |

submitted by Pat -- "Hearts & Rings" Wall Quilt I have never made a "generic" wedding quilt. All wedding quilts that I have made were so very personal to the bride and groom. But, I have always wanted to make a wedding quilt in beige, mint green and peach. The "Heart Blossom" block is from the "Thimbleberries Sampler". I designed the interlocking rings for this quilt. Bride & groom names & date & place of wedding can be embroidered in center of rings. Or photo of bride & groom can be put in one of the rings.

| 1999 April Baby Quilts |
BarbV's challenge -- With the coming of spring (in the northern hemisphere) and all its new beginnings, let's think of babies. And, of course, the obligatory quilts for them. Design a baby quilt. Consider size, theme, color, whatever. You may design this quilt in EQ3 or EQ4. Of course, those with EQ3 will be able to accept only EQ3 files, but that doesn't mean they can't _submit_ EQ3 files with their designs. Search through all our resources for block patterns, appliques, quilting, and fabrics. Combine any and all to come up with a lovely quilt for a little one. |

| 1999 March BabyBlock setting |
BarbV's challenge -- Choose an interesting block from the EQ3 Block Library or create an original block. Use the Baby Blocks setting to get an effect that will be quite a surprise. Quilts this month will be set only in the Baby Blocks layout. You may use any block you want, though you may find that some will work much better than others. Experiment. Create a quilt that has a very different overall look because you skewed the square block to a 60 degree diamond in the Baby Blocks layout. ***Please do not submit 3D isometric quilts this time. Save them for another challenge month.*** Your mission this month, should you choose to accept it, is to create a quilt that no one has seen before because no one thought to take your choice for a square block and skew it. Create a quilt with an overall look that is awesome. The good news is, if you can piece it (and even foundation piece it) as a square, you most certainly can piece it as a 60-degree diamond! The gooder news is that EQ3 will give you the patterns for your templates already skewed to the diamond. |

| February 1999 Y2K Quilts |
BarbV's challenge -- The challenge for February was to make a quilt layout for the year 2000. You could design a quilt with 2000 pieces. You could collect blocks with names that are significant to this event, in your opinion. You could design something original. Something funky maybe. Futuristic. Whatever. You could do something that has nothing obvious to do with the millennium other than the subtle, distinguishing character that all the blocks together add up to 2000 pieces. No more.(How many pieces are in the Jane Stickle quilt? You could make it king size and then some!) No one says you have to make this quilt. So if the size turns out to be as large as a football field in order to get in all you desire to get your point across, who cares? |

| 1999 January 2 block quilt |
BarbV's challenge -- Search through any of your block resources and find two blocks that integrate with each other in an over-all quilt setting. You may use any blocks you like: traditional, contemporary, or original. But show us ways that you could set two blocks to give some wonderful secondary designs that you might like to highlight with color. You're welcome to include more than one quilt or combination per file. |
